Moving to a new home is stressful for kids because they are uprooted from their familiar surroundings and have to leave behind their friends and go to a strange place. Sudden disruption to their routine also adds to the stress. While the task of relocation can be efficiently managed by professional packer and movers, the task of managing the moving process for the children of the house rests on parents and other adults.
Here are some tips which help in making the moving process less stressful for kids.
Involve the children in the pre-moving process
The children should become a part of the various steps prior to moving. Showing them the various properties you are interested in and even taking them on house hunting trips make them feel more involved and generates excitement. Take the opinions of your children regarding various aspects of the new home such as the colour of the walls of the living room or their own room. Giving them freedom to decorate their own room also excites them which makes them look forward to living in the new house.
Involve the children in packing process
Even though you hire professionals to pack the household goods, allow the children to pack some of their personal things at the time of home shifting. These can be anything such as books and school supplies, toys, clothes, etc. The packing process will keep them busy and prevent them from moving about in the house. They can also decorate their own boxes with stickers and attach their own labels to their boxes. You can also put labels bearing your children's names on the boxes which will increase their excitement.
Familiarise the children with the new place
Show the photographs of the new house or their new school or other places in the new neighbourhood such as playground, shops, etc. If possible, visit the neighbourhood with your children. Taking a walk in the neighbourhood and visiting the local playground or recreational centre will help in meeting new neighbours and other people living in the area. All this ensures that the children will not get a surprise on moving to the new place.
Take the children to their favourite spots
Children have many spots in the town which they adore and have fond memories built during their short lives. Take them to those spots prior to household shifting to a new place. The spots can be anything such as park, restaurant, mall, friend’s house, etc.
Organise a farewell party
Throw a farewell party in your old house and invite the school friends of your children and the neighbourhood kids. The farewell party will give a sense of closure to your children and motivate them to prepare for life in a new place. A party can also be organised in the new house involving the new neighbours so that your children get acquainted with the children living in the new neighbourhood.
Moving Day Pack
It may take even a week or more for the all boxes containing your household goods to be unpacked and arranged in the new house. But there are some things belonging to your children which they cannot do without during moving and certainly not for a whole week or more. They can be anything such as video games or favourite toys. Solution is a moving day pack containing everything they need. Snacks and chocolates can also be put in the bag to make it all the more exciting for the children.
Make your children create a memory book in which they stick photographs of the old house and their friends. They can also write the contact numbers of their friends. This will be cherished by the children even when they grow up.
